Sports is fast becoming a great platform for increasing access to health services. The annual Guma Youth Tournament successfully attracted 450 people who accessed services including HIV and AIDs counseling and testing; malaria testing; STI screening for syphilis and referrals provided for the nearest health centre-Kabwohe Health Centre IV for treatment.
All people attending the tournament heard at least one message about good health and disease prevention from UHMG and the different partners . “We started the Guma Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Annual Cup in 2004, now 11 years ago. We realised that the 2-3 hours during the final match would be better spent if preceded with health services. Now we have a health camp during the weekend of the final matches between the boys and girls’ teams.”
